We all want and desire our children to become confident, secure, feeling
positive about themselves – their abilities, their personalities, their
temperaments, their interests.
We want to them to feel convinced they can try new things and to be open to all
that this world has to offer.

How we help them to become confident is a delicate balance of letting them try
and fail, encouraging their effort and rather than the end result,
and teaching them strategies to move beyond any of their challenges. Lifelong
lessons we all are still learning.

One sure thing we can do is teach by example.
One of the most powerful influences on children is our actions.
We constantly model how to treat each other, how to speak to each other, how to
get over challenges,
how to foster relationships, and how to instill virtues of goodness, honesty,
integrity, truthfulness, …

Confidence building begins with you and me, teacher and parents together.

Here is a wonderful poem that gives us pause about our actions:

The 2’s

Your two’s engage mainly in parallel play – enjoying the company of a mate nearby, all

the while unravelling their own storyline. One of the many joys as a teacher is to become

a catalyst for shared experiences.

The other day when our mountain was out on the carpet, the children were each

engrossed in their own world, when I sat down and started to chat with one child who

was attempting to put a large elephant into the small hole of the volcano. He kept trying

to stuff it in – he looked at me – I looked at him and with my arms extended I said, “The

elephant is too big.” “Too big!” he repeated. “Can you find a smaller animal to put down

the hole?” I asked and made a tiny gesture with my two fingers. “Smaller animal,”

he repeated – he found a little monkey and put it down the hole and it slid all the way

down and fell out the other end. “You did it!” I responded. “I did it!” he said. All this

excitement was not lost on the others nearby. A group gathered round the volcano and

with some gentle encouragement for turn-taking – every child had an opportunity to see

whether the animal they picked up would be “just right” or “too big” to fit in the volcano.

Each attempt was followed by clapping for success or laughter and a scramble for a

smaller animal when it just wouldn’t fit. This was truly a rich and wonderful learning

moment.

The 3’s

Our weekly themes in September were Back to School, All About Me, and Fall. For our Thanksgiving week the children experienced cornmeal in the sensory table, smelled nutmeg on their paper pies, and talked about what they were thankful for ( family, playing, and toys). For our Fire Safety week we pretended to be fire fighters in our dramatic play area, and we explained and practised our fire drill. During Nursery Rhyme week we shared rhymes and recited favourites, and we all took turns being nimble and quick and jumping over the candlestick. As part of our Transportation theme, the children were each given a boarding pass and pretended going through airport security, boarding a plane, and travelling in an airplane. As part of our lead-up to Hallowe’en, our dramatic play area was filled with costumes to try on and assume a new identity.

CA Kindergarten

Art is...

painting, drawing, pasting and sculpting. It is sewing and building, colouring and folding. It is expressing and observing.

Art is getting something that is inside you to the outside.

We have begun our year in art going through the 7 elements of art: line, shape, colour, value, texture, form and space.

All of these elements are in everything we would like the children to experience in our program and we will use these elements in the styles of famous works as well and help the children recognize them throughout their exploration in these creative endeavours.

We explored the element of line by painting different types of lines with black paint on white paper and white paint on black paper. How can we use line in sculpture? Get some sticks and start by wrapping them around to create a lovely lawn ornament and we gave the children a paper with 2 lines already drawn across the page and they turned it into whatever they saw within those lines and this created a wonderful dialogue about our individuality and why everyone saw something slightly different.

When exploring shape the children cut and paste Geometric shapes that were already very familiar to them and created a scene using those shapes. (several lines put together made a shape....who knew?) They then explored more organic shapes or shapes that are seen in nature by creating the lovely sheep that are still gracing our bulletin boards as well as shading around rectangles and squares to create a night time city scape.

CA After School

This year in our Creative Arts After School Program we have been following the history of art.

Following a loose timeline we started the year off exploring prehistoric art (cave drawings and paint made from organic ingredients), and then moved on to Aboriginal art. With a focus on the Pacific Northwest Peoples and the Inuit; we looked at the strong presence of line and symmetry in their works. The students produced their own papier mache masks of animals and supernatural beings.

Clay sculpture kept our theme going as we continued to look at what inspired these artists from the past. It has been interesting to note that all peoples past and present look to nature/their environment, animals, the supernatural and ancestry as subjects for art. With the Egyptians these ideas continued with a heavier influence on the supernatural/gods and ancestors. The children drew their own interpretations of Egyptian pharaohs and people.

It is already the end of October and we’ve finished this month off with Ancient Greek Art. A collage inspired by the appreciation of beauty in Ancient Greece and an exercise of balance and proportion in architecture, have been our recent projects. November will continue with art inspired by portraiture and mosaics from the Romans.
The 3 year old children are ready to be in smaller groups for circle time and have much to share about home, summer and family. They created these preschool rainbows by going on a search in the classroom for things that are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Yes you may leave the carpet and touch the toys my friends, you are big kids now!

Creative Arts Kindergarten roam the room and discover what they are able to do now that they are just a little bit older. We have smaller groups this year so we are able to do so much more with them already but we would love to fill the class with their friends so if you know of anyone who is in Kindergarten we would love for their friends to join in on the fun. Remember we do pick up at all 3 Glebe schools...Mutchmore, Corpus and First Ave and offer a lunch program 5 days a week.

The 2 year olds had their first full morning after the staggered start and they are a lovely group who all sat for circle and participated in the songs and games. We had 3 moms come in to help for our first climb up the stairs for gross motor play and they couldn't believe that all 14 sat down at the same time for snack and how darn quiet the class was. The 2 year olds are busy exploring this fun environment that is just for them...it really is the quietest class.

During playtime downstairs, two boys had been asking the teachers how to make airplanes. They created some and with the teacher's permission, flew them in the hallway. Respecting the ideas of emmergent curriculum,(which is that we should sometimes follow the lead of children in planning activities), Cindy thought to capitalize on their interest and carry this activity upstairs for all to enjoy. All of the children were seated in a large circle while Cindy demonstrated how to fold the paper in steps to make either regular airplanes or jets. They wrote their names on them and practiced throwing them, trying to hit a table, holding contests to see who could throw the farthest and other games. Then the parachute came out! On the count of three ,Cindy had them lift the parchute and throw their planes underneath and each scrambled to find their individual planes. What fun! Then the parachute was lifted in the air . The children had to shake them all off the top. It was a wonderful spontaneous half hour totally inspired by the students.Good Morninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04663636433646189663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593530557460042823.post-8949580917670166962012-02-03T05:56:00.000-08:002012-02-03T06:01:11.905-08:00More of Barbara Reid's "Picture a Tree"<img style="width: 320px; Inspired by the book - ‘Children around the world’ - we have been exploring art from different countries and cultures. They spent three weeks learning about art from Mexico. The lesson ended with a very special “Day of the Dead’ celebration. These are their fabulous skull creations. The children also did wonderful portraits of Freda Kahlo – but you will have to wait for the third annual vernissage to see them!

Good Morninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04663636433646189663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593530557460042823.post-60567833064999484032011-11-21T13:19:00.000-08:002011-11-28T13:16:48.058-08:00

The toddlers have settled in very nicely. They come into the classroom ready to play! Routines have set in and they seem so comfortable in the class. It is amazing how nicely they sit at circle time and how enthusiastic they are to participate in all activities. A favourite song of theirs is the "roly poly" song and most of them are able to sing along with the teachers and do all the actions. We look forward to getting to know their little personalities even more as the year goes on!
Good Morninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04663636433646189663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593530557460042823.post-30235835784674747442011-11-21T13:18:00.000-08:002011-11-28T13:19:15.085-08:00re-inacting the story "Big Pumpkin"

Our Creative Arts Preschool class has been happily emerged in wonderful and challenging artistic and dramatic endeavours this fall. Due to the intimate and cozy nature of a smaller class, we have been able to complete complicated projects with many steps. We have used many classic children's books like Eric Carle's The Hungary Caterpillar, and Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild things Are. For the school play about World Stories we used a book about Anansi, an African folk character. We designed clay spiders, and created a colourful oil pastel drawing of Anansi. Our drama component for that week consisted of spider songs, and poems complete with mini-spider rings to wear. Some of our other projects have included leaf prints, watercolour paintings, sculpted bowls with fruit, and chalk pastel work. In drama we have re-told our stories using props, poems, music, and creative movement. We also use games. One example was a game where the children would run to place their feet on coloured pieces of felt when they given a colour to find. Our Halloween book "The Big Pumpkin", was acted out with full costume and speaking parts for all. The children have all become close and also enjoy the free play time at the beginning of class. Thanks to the internet we have even been able to play some stories online and our most recent book, "Who I Be", had a lovely CD with music to accompany it. We look forward to many more weeks of this spirited and friendly group.
Good Morninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04663636433646189663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593530557460042823.post-47522761548324621882011-10-12T06:25:00.000-07:002011-10-12T06:57:01.156-07:00Fabulous Photos!
The Creative Arts After School program is off to a great start. For so many of the returning students - GMCAPS is like a second home. Our new friends have received a warm welcome and fit right in with our little creative community. We too, have been reviewing the elements of art. The children had an opportunity to choose one of the seven elements (shape, space, line, texture, value, form, colour) and the medium they wanted to work with. The results, like the children themselves, are amazing!
We also spent some time last week taking outdoor photographs that we later printed - then attached to pieces of wood with an acrylic medium. This week the children will remove the paper backing by rubbing with a wet cloth, revealing the transferred image. We can't wait to see the finished product.

Stay tuned!Good Morninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04663636433646189663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593530557460042823.post-79288138898284736032011-10-12T05:55:00.000-07:002011-10-12T06:54:48.010-07:00Say cheese!
The Creative Arts Kindergarten children are having a great year so far. The lunch pick ups from Corpus Christie, Mutchmor and First Ave are underway. The Bank street construction has definitely been a bit of an obstacle but we have come up with safe and creative ways to get to school. It has also allowed the children to see many machines in action. There have been a few children that have eaten both their school snack and lunch before getting to creative arts - so please remember to put snack and lunch in separate containers. The children love the social aspect of the lunch room. Lots of chatting, laughing, sharing and eating takes place at the tables.

Nature has been strongly represented in our art projects so far this year. What better way to explore the elements of art than by using objects found in our everyday lives. The fairy houses were a big hit. The children were over the moon to see tiny footprints and fairy dust - proof that the beds, hammocks, swings and bathtubs so lovingly created, had been visited by some little winged friends.

In drama, the children were given the opportunity to imagine how they might move if they had wings of their own. We have enjoyed lots of cooperative games, some creative movement and had a lot of fun dramatizing the story "The Enormous Potato".

The year really is off to a magical start!Good Morninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04663636433646189663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593530557460042823.post-15800804054753165152011-10-11T08:27:00.000-07:002011-10-12T06:52:40.122-07:00The year is off to a fabulous start!

The children in our Creative Arts Preschool program are enjoying their Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The children are playing well together and from the get-go, have been producing great works of art that consist of many steps. So far we have used watercolours, pastels (both chalk and oil) tempera paint, acrylic paint and plasticine. We are looking forward to trying other mediums in the future.
During the drama portion of the day, the entire group participates enthusiastically and offers their own feedback on the activities which are being presented.

This year at Good Morning our three year olds have all become acquainted with each other and have settled in nicely to the routines and program. We have a lively, curious, social group who have enjoyed all aspects of the room especially the carpet toys, manipulative table and sensory bin. They are eager to come to the art table, engage in cooperative play with their peers and participate in circle. We have been exploring themes like "All about me", "Apples" and most recently talking about ,"Harvest-Thanksgiving", and "Fall." The children are excited to soon be taking their turns at Show-and-tell. We had some fun with trucks, paint, songs and poems at cirlce time and lots of speed on the plasma cars in the gross motor room.
New friends having fun at the sand table pouring, filling and measuring. I'm sure they will have fun once they have cirlcle time, snack and playtime in the Gross Motor room.

The kindergarten program started off with learning one of the elements of art. Line was our first topic of discussion and we talked about horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.
